The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food André Lamontagne is set to make an announcement this morning relative to the implementation of an institutional purchasing protocol that is being described as " the first step towards greater food autonomy in Quebec".
Provincial public institutions will now have to define their Quebec food purchase targets. The menus of hospitals and cafeterias will be particularly targeted for this first phase of the planned local food purchasing strategy.
A directory of Quebec food related products and agricultural producers will be put online so the institutions may order their products, while creating support for local farms and the provincial agri-food industry.
By 2023, 85% of public institutions will have targets to meet, and by 2025, 100% of public institutions.
